How do you stay motivated and push yourself in training?
I am so lucky to be surrounded by such amazing women in our BMD Northcliffe squad that it is easy to stay motivated and push myself at training. We all work so hard and nobody wants to give an inch at training. I think this has been a huge part of my success! I also am a big believer in “the harder you work, the luckier you’ll get” so this is always in the back of my mind.
Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get into the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or pool?
I eat the same breakfast and dinner every time before racing. It makes me feel super comfortable and it’s like my body then knows it’s time to race. It’s hard to have too many rituals as surf brings so many different conditions and every single race is different so I have to be ready for anything.
Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?
For me the most memorable moments in my career is having my family and friends supporting me at races. It is so special to see them at a race and I really cherish those moments! The results come and go but they are what stay with me forever.
Are there any specific achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of and that you feel have significantly impacted your journey as an athlete?
There has been so many amazing moments in my career so it is definitely hard to just pick one but winning the triple crown in the 2018/19 season would be pretty hard to top. Also winning 9 gold at the Aussie titles was huge for me!
Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?
I don’t have a lot of time for hobbies unfortunately but I am super passionate about giving back to surf life saving and connecting with the youth of our sport.
How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
It’s a really tough thing to juggle, I feel like I’m in a rush 24/7 to fit everything in but I just try to take one thing at a time and focus on that task at hand. If I get too ahead of myself I can get very overwhelmed so just enjoying what I’m doing while I’m doing it has helped me to juggle everything. As I am a little older now, I really appreciate slowing down and enjoying the little things like taking my dog for a walk, a mid week dinner out with Riley or just relaxing on the couch in between the craziness of training and racing.
What are your top 3 ENGINE products (either for racing or training)?
I absolutely love my black shredskin togs, black weapon goggles and of course a comfy Engine hoodie for winter!
