Dylan Wilson
My motivation stems from my complete trust in my coach, Wes Berg and his training program. Consistency is key and knowing that i’ll not reach my goals if I cut corners - and my sister’s there to keep an eye on me!
Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get into the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or pool?No rituals but I'll have a big breakfast and an extra long warmup on carnival mornings. Then just stay relaxed, keep an eye on how the surfs conditions change throughout the day and focus on the start.
Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?Winning my first individual Aussie medal in Perth in U17s was incredible, knowing I could race and perform at the highest level. Also after the years of Covid restrictions, finally getting to represent Queensland at last years interstate championships and competing in the Super Surf League with team mates was a highlight.
Are there any specific achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of and that you feel have significantly impacted your journey as an athlete?Last season taking out the Iron, Swim and Belt Race at QLD State and the 2km swim at Aussies.
Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?Fishing and cooking - although I don’t really enjoy eating fish.
How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
It’s definitely difficult to balance, but when you enjoy the sport as much as I do you find that training with your friends is just as much fun as hanging out away of training. I spend the majority of my free time outside fishing or at the beach anyway.
