How do you stay motivated and push yourself in training?
Staying focused on my goals as well as the desire to perform at my best, allows me to continue being motivated to push myself at training. On top of that I love my sport and enjoy training and racing with the great people that do it.
Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get into the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or pool?
Post-warm-up, I like to sit and assess the surf conditions to structure my race plan. After that, I go back to the tent with my teammates and distract myself from any unnecessary nerves. Before my race, I review my plan and may discuss any questions I have with my coaches to get my head in the right place to race.
Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?
In 2021 I was part of the North Bondi open mens taplin team that won gold at Aussies. This was the first time that the club had ever done this and it came as a result of support from a huge group of people. It was the most memorable moment in my career so far as it showed what was possible when a group of people from a relatively small club can do when they want something enough. The way that this race brought so many people together with such passion was something I haven't experienced anywhere before.
Are there any specific achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of and that you feel have significantly impacted your journey as an athlete?
I was a very mediocre athlete when I was younger but in under 17's I won my first individual medal in the board at state. This taught me what can be achieved through the right amount of dedication and hard work. I continued to work and improve, and now I have many achievements that I am very proud of, the foremost being winning the Molokai to Oahu Prone Paddleboard World Championships in Hawaii in 2023.
Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?
Most of my time outside of training and racing is spent doing Uni. When I get the chance I love surfing and most activities revolving around the ocean.
How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
I enjoy living a busy lifestyle however it requires being very organised, and listening to when my body needs a rest.
What are your top 3 ENGINE products (either for racing or training)?
I wear my club cut briefs to every session and I take my backpack pro everywhere so they are definitely my top two. There were a few cold and miserable days racing this season and the longline puffer jacket was the only thing that could keep me warm so that is also one of my favourites.
