How do you stay motivated and push yourself in training?
My main goal is to gain a scholarship to an American University through swimming, so I can do my graduate studies overseas and travel. The American college swimming program is amazing, so I would love to go over there and swim while completing my degree. So, even when I don’t want to train, and I’m sore, I remember the bigger picture, and how doing the hard work now will get me places later in life.
Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get into the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or pool?
I like to chat before races, and get to know my competitors. Once I walk out onto pool deck, though, or I’m in marshalling on the beach, I focus on the race in front of me by swinging my arms, stretching, and psyching myself up.
Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?
My most memorable and defining moment happened at the last Aussies. I was in the middle of the 2km ocean swim, and was leading the front pack. I was winning, and had a lot to give – but the water safety guy interfered and gave me and a bunch of others the wrong directions. I had to swim an extra 300m out of the way, lost my lead, and had to swim as hard as I could to get back into race. I came third and nabbed the bronze medal, which was lucky, but I knew I could have had gold. Lesson learnt – next time I’ll listen to my instincts.
Are there any specific achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of and that you feel have significantly impacted your journey as an athlete?
Winning the 1500m at the NSW Age Championships, the Terrigal Ocean Swim, getting bronze at Aussies (knowing that could have attained gold) , and getting third in the 5km swim at Penrith has definitely made me realise I’m a long distance, endurance swimmer and athlete.
Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?
I love gaming. I like shoes. And I hate to nap. I’ll do anything to avoid having to nap during the day, even if I’m dead tired.
How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
My parents make sure I go to as many social events and activities with my friends as possible, and I also take one afternoon off a week for studying and doing what I love best - chilling. I love just laying in my bed, playing on my phone. Whenever I have a weekend off from training or competition, I work on school assignments and study.
What are your top 3 ENGINE products (either for racing or training)?
My favourite swimmers to race in are the Wingskin Bullets jammers for pool, and the Iron Jammer 3s for surf. My favourite goggles are the bullet style, as they’re the most comfortable for my face, and I find them better for racing.
Anything else you’d like to add to your profile?
My little brother, Ash, has been trying his best for years to outswim me. I think its funny. I love to race him, toy with him, then burn him at the end. But, I think one day he’ll be bigger than me, and eventually outswim me.
