How do you stay motivated and push yourself in training?
My goals, which are to be an Olympic athlete and Australia’s next top Ironman, keep me motivated. I also have some amazing coaches which are really invested in me, and I don’t like disappointing them, so I always train as hard as I can.
Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get into the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or pool?
In the pool, my first race is always my worst, probably because of nerves, so I always make sure I warm up properly, and cool down after every race. I also listen to music beforehand, but I don’t really focus until I’m on the block. And then, it’s game on.
With surf, once I’m in marshalling, I start checking the surf, if there’s any rips, where the best line is to head out on either the board or in the swim.
Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?
Definitely winning the double at NSW State Surf Life Saving Champs last year – I won both gold in both the U13s Male Swim and U13s Male Ironman. Also winning the NSW Open Water State Championship, 2.5km in my age group was pretty awesome, too.
Are there any specific achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of and that you feel have significantly impacted your journey as an athlete?
Winning the above events has made me realise I’m an endurance athlete. I’m definitely a better long distance swimmer than I am a sprinter, which is probably why I do well in the Ironman events as well. Long distance pool, open water, and ocean swims are definitely the future for me.
Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?
I love music, and I play the drums. I love reading fantasy novels, and I’m also into drawing and art.
How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
My parents make sure I go to as many social events and activities with my friends as possible, and I also take one afternoon off a week for my drum lessons and studying. Whenever I have a weekend off from training or competition, I work on school assignments and studying.
What are your top 3 ENGINE products (either for racing or training)?
My favourite swimmers to race in are the Wingskin Bullets jammers, and the Iron Jammer 3s for surf are really comfortable. My favourite goggles are the bullet style, as they’re the most comfortable for my face, and I find them better for racing.
Anything else you’d like to add to your profile?
I have an older brother, Bodi, and it’s one of my lifetime goals to outswim him. I can’t wait to smash him. My favourite movies are Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars.
