How do you stay motivated and push yourself in training?
It helps that I enjoy training and if I wasn’t training for surf, I’d probably been training for something else. I use the sessions to work on my racing. Each week I set goals for myself to achieve and feel good when I can tick them off. The squad is competitive, so we all push each other whilst having some fun along the way.
Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get into the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or pool?
In the lead up to race day, I like to get a massage and chill out for a bit, try not to think about it too much. On the day, I like to get to the beach early so I can get organised for racing. Before warming up I have a chat with my coaches and assess the conditions and work out a race plan.
Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?
Most memorable moment was winning the under 19 Australian board race. It was a great race and felt good that all my training and hard work was worth it.
Are there any specific achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of and that you feel have significantly impacted your journey as an athlete?
Winning the NSW Under 17 Iron person was a personal achievement and my first individual medal. All the training and hard work paid off. I have always loved competing on the board, so wining the Under 19’s board race was a highlight. The next year I came second, losing to my twin brother which has provided good banter around the dinner table.
Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?
Not really a surprise, but I love the NRL, just love to chill and watch the footy, hopefully with the Eels winning!
How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
When I am not training, I am usually working or studying. I am currently at Uni studying Exercise Physiology. When I do have spare time, I like to relax by watching Netflix, rugby league, and catching up on sleep.
What are your top 3 ENGINE products (either for racing or training)?
Shredskin Pros, Black Weapon Googles, Classic Puffer Jacket.
