Emily 'Emmy' Findlay
How do you stay motivated and push yourself in training?
When I am training I like to stay in the moment - thinking too far ahead about how much more I have to get through doesn't help, I focus on what is happening now.
Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get into the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or pool?
I don't have any rituals really, I just try my best to stay calm and take it one race at a time.
Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?
Winning my third straight Iron title at this years SA Surf States. I went into the last leg a fair way behind the leader, but I stuck to my race plan, caught her by the first can and overtook her to win the race. It was a very satisfying victory that I worked very hard for.
Are there any specific achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of and that you feel have significantly impacted your journey as an athlete?
Winning my first ever individual gold medal in the swim as an Under 11 at SLSSA States was the first time I realised that I could do whatever I set my mind to, as long as I worked hard. It set me on a journey of many more gold medals and state titles, but I'll never forget that first one.
Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?
I really just love anything to do with water. I have a cavoodle called Arthur and I like training him and teaching him new tricks.
How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
I don't have many interests outside of sport because I love it so much! Most of my close friends are from surf or swimming, which makes it seem like its social and not just hard work. I am only just starting high school this year so it will be interesting to see how much that impacts my training.
What are your top 3 ENGINE products (either for racing or training)?
1. Santorini 1 piece. I have so many colours, and I wear them for training as well as racing at surf.
2. My engine hoodies because they are so comfortable, I wear them everywhere.
3. Wingskin Bullet racesuit. It's my go-to suit for pool racing because it is so light and comfortable.
