Nicholas 'Nic' Middleton
How do you stay motivated and push yourself in training?
My motivation is driven by a relentless desire to improve. I’ve never believed in the idea of a "perfect" performance, even after some of my best races, I find myself breaking down what I could have done better. That mindset keeps me motivated and pushing forward every day.
Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get into the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or Pool?
Visualisation is a massive part of my pre-race routine. I often run through every possible scenario in my head, even the worst-case ones. I believe that if you’ve already visualised the toughest race conditions or situations, it makes the actual race feel much more manageable. It prepares you mentally for adversity, and that edge is often the difference when things get unpredictable out there.
Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?
The Maroochydore Classic, part of the 2025 World Ocean Series, was a defining moment for me. I finished 3rd but could have won in the Open Ironman, and that day made something click. It was the moment I truly realised that I could compete with, and beat, anyone.
Are there any specific achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of and that you feel have significantly impacted your journey as an athlete?
There are a few achievements that stand out in my journey so far. Representing NSW in the 2025 State Team was a huge honour and something I’m incredibly proud of. Making the Open Ironman final at the 2025 Aussies marked a major milestone in my development and showed me just how far I’ve come. Placing 6th in the 2025 Long Course Coolangatta Gold, one of the toughest endurance races in our sport, tested me physically and mentally, and was a true highlight of my career thus far.
Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?
I’m a big LEGO and Star Wars fan. It started as a childhood love and turned into a pretty big collection over the years. It’s my way of switching off and recharging. This has turned into a love for construction and design. That passion eventually led me to pursue a career in building certification. I find it incredibly rewarding to see a project come together from the ground up.
How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
It’s a juggling act, but I’m lucky. My career offers the flexibility I need, and the company I work for is incredibly supportive. My days are packed, but the structure works for me. I couldn’t do any of it without my girlfriend. When the training and work grind gets heavy, especially through winter, she's the light at the end of the tunnel when things get overwhelming.
