Matt Magnussen
How do you stay motivated and push yourself in training?
Goal setting and dedication to training are key to achieving my best. I stay motived by committing to living a healthy lifestyle, being around my training squad and mates, and always listening to my coaches.
Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get into the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or pool?
Good nights sleep, fuelling up with good food, keeping hydrated, staying relaxed, pump up music and focusing on executing the plan.
Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?
Making two Australian Junior Teams in the one year - 2022 Australian Junior Dolphin Swim Team and Australian Youth Lifesaving Team - and travelling overseas to race for both and representing my country.
Are there any specific achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of and that you feel have significantly impacted your journey as an athlete?
Winning Gold in the Open Surf Teams and U17 Surf Teams at 2021 Aussies. This gave me a big confidence boost and then the following year was selected onto 2 Australian Junior Teams for swimming and surf. Captaining the Australian Youth Lifesaving Team to win the World Championships in Italy was very special.
Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?
I love surfing, mountain bike riding and 4 wheel driving.
How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
Balance is key. Scheduling in training, recovery, Uni, and also getting out in the outdoors and socialising are really important for me to keep that balance. Keeping a diary and staying organised also keeps me on track.
What are your top 3 ENGINE products (either for racing or training)?
Bullet racing suit, Bullet goggles & black trucker hat.
