How do you stay motivated and push yourself in training?
When I’m on the start line, what matters is knowing I didn’t cut corners. Even short moments of pain can turn into something I’ll be proud of forever. That mindset helps me push through tough days. There’s no shortcut. I just show up and try to get a little better each day.
Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get into the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or pool?
I’m not big on rituals or lucky stuff. What gets me ready is knowing I’ve done the work. I prep well, stick to my plan, and on race day I keep it simple, stay calm, trust myself, and focus on the job.
Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?
Winning both the board and Ironman titles on the same day at Nationals was a huge highlight. But the biggest moment for me was getting back in the water after beating cancer. The wins and the tough times, they’ve both shaped who I am now.
Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?
I’m into reading, mostly business or self-help stuff. It gives me new ways to think, which helps in training too. I’m also a bit of a coffee nerd. I love checking out local cafés when I’ve got time.
How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
I plan my week so I can train hard but still enjoy other things too. For me, switching off is just as important as switching on. That balance keeps me going. And when I feel off, I just go for a run. It clears my head every time.
What are your top 3 ENGINE products (either for racing or training)?
The gear you use matters. If it feels right, you can just focus on training. My go-to’s are the Iron Jammer 3, Club Cuts, and the Backpack Pro. Can’t go without them.
