Megan 'Meggie' Geldenhuys
1. How do you stay motivated and push yourself in training?
I stay motivated by reminding myself of my goals that I set up at the start of each season. My goals do vary from short term that would typically be within the next couple of weeks to longer term which would be things like Age Champs the next year.
2. Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get into the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or pool?
Usually as a brekkie on the days that I race, I would have two weetbix, then add some honey on top and then another two weetbix blocks and put honey on top of that.
During my dryland and after my warmup I would be listening to music to lock in and get focussed.
Once I’m behind the blocks I would give my arms and legs a good couple of slaps to keep my muscles warm, followed by 2-3 jumps and then a big deep breath.
3. Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?
For me, the most memorable moment would be at the Tilly Cup Camp in 2024. I was so lucky to have created a bunch of new friendships with a group of people that are today still a huge part of my life. During the Tilly Cup it was so good having my team support me while I raced and the atmosphere over those couple of days was awesome.
4. Are there any specific achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of and that you feel have significantly impacted your journey as an athlete?
Becoming Australian Champion in the 50m backstroke and getting a bronze for the 100m backstroke at Age Champs earlier this year. For me this was a huge achievement as I have always loved competing in 50 back and I am particularly proud of the fact that I was able to better my result from last year, where I got a bronze for that event.
5. Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?
I used to love playing netball because it was a team sport and learnt a lot about working together, whereas swimming is very much an individual sport. My love for swimming, however, was greater. A little compromise I was able to make was that even though I don't get to play the game anymore, I still get to umpire the games on Saturdays.
6. How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
I train mostly throughout the week before or after school. So when it comes to the weekend I make sure to use it to relax or catch up with friends at the beach usually.
7. What are your top 3 ENGINE products (either for racing or training)?
I would say my top 3 engine products would be the equipment such as training/race goggles and I love the training backpack, I like their comfortable hoodies and then definitely the training togs. Something that I have spotted is the new bikinis that have been launched, so I am super keen to try those out.
