24km Lake Tekapo Swim: Inside an Extreme Open Water Endurance Challenge

At ENGINE, we believe swimming is more than performance - it’s about resilience, mindset, and pushing beyond what feels possible.

Recently, that mindset came to life in one of the toughest open water environments.

Brunswick Heads swimmer Ed Mason completed a 24km crossing of New Zealand’s Lake Tekapo, finishing in an incredible 7 hours, 57 minutes and 30 seconds. A swim defined by extreme cold, discipline, and purpose.

❄️ Swimming at the Edge

Lake Tekapo isn’t your average swim.

With freezing alpine conditions and vast, open water, the crossing demands more than physical endurance. It requires mental toughness, focus, and the ability to keep moving when everything tells you to stop.

This is the kind of environment where preparation meets mindset - where every stroke matters.

Ed began in 6°C air temperature, entering water sitting between 13–15°C — conditions that demand constant movement, focus, and mental control.

🏊 A Rare Achievement

Crossing Lake Tekapo is something very few swimmers have ever done.

While exact records are unclear, Ed is believed to be only the fourth person to complete the crossing.

Even more impressively, he is the first swimmer to complete both Lake Tekapo and Lake Taupo crossings - the latter being a 40km swim completed in January last year.

💙 Swimming With Purpose

What makes this achievement even more powerful is the reason behind it.

Ed took on this challenge to raise funds for Make-A-Wish Australia, supporting children living with critical illness.

Every kilometre swum represented more than progress across a lake — it represented hope, strength, and the ability to make a difference when it matters most.

🏊 Built Through Consistency

This wasn’t an overnight achievement.

After previously completing a 40km swim across Lake Taupo, Ed set his sights on something even more demanding - colder water, tougher conditions, and a new level of challenge.

That progression reflects what we know to be true in swimming:

  • You don’t skip levels
  • You don’t rush the process
  • You earn every kilometre

⚡ What This Means for Swimmers

Whether you’re training in the pool, racing, or stepping into open water for the first time — this story is a reminder of what’s possible.

Swimming builds more than fitness. It builds:

  • Mental resilience
  • Confidence under pressure
  • The ability to keep going when it gets uncomfortable

And sometimes, it becomes a platform for something much bigger than yourself.

🌊 The ENGINE Mindset

At ENGINE, we design for moments like this.

For early mornings.
For race day.
For pushing beyond what feels possible.

Because swimming isn’t just about speed - it’s about purpose, progression, and showing up when it counts.

Ed Mason’s swim is a powerful example of what happens when preparation meets purpose.

And it’s a reminder to all of us:

Keep going.
