Joe Collins
How do you stay motivated and push yourself in training?
I like to Think back to what I’ve sacrificed to put myself in this position and if I’m not doing the work somebody else is.
Many athletes have pre-game rituals that help them get in the zone. What are some of your personal pre-game rituals or routines that you believe help you get in the zone before hitting the beach or pool?
I’m pretty relaxed so no major pre game rituals but I’m often seen doing a sprint along the start line and a couple jumps to get my energy systems firing and to settle the nerves before a big race!
Reflecting on your career so far, what would you consider as the most memorable or defining moment?
Most defining moment of my career so far was winning the u14 Ironman at ocean athletes (NZ Junior Nationals) wasn’t always the biggest as a kid but managed to jag a wave to the front and the elation I felt after that pushed me into this life and goal of being a professional ironman.
Are there any specific achievements or milestones that you are particularly proud of and that you feel have significantly impacted your journey as an athlete?
I think wining my first iron series round was a big realisation that I’ve made it as a professional ironman and gave me the confidence to believe there’s no reason I can’t continue to keep challenging the guys I’ve looked up to my whole life.
Beyond your athletic pursuits, do you have any hobbies or passions that might surprise people?
I’m currently playing off a 16 handicap at golf and aiming to get that below 10 by the off season. I find it’s an awesome way to spend my time, stay active and work on my mental strength for racing when you have to put the bad shot or a bad decision behind you and move forward in a split second.
How do you balance your intense training and competition schedule with personal interests outside of your sport?
It’s definitely challenging but I think as long as your organised and find time do the other stuff you enjoy in life there’s no reason you can’t live a balanced lifestyle.
